How do you know what to buy at the grocery store?

I was recently asked, "how do you know what to buy at the grocery store to feed the kids?"

For me, it's second nature and I don't really think about it, I just do it. It got me thinking back to being a young mom, myself, and not really knowing what to buy at the store. I also remember making a decision to learn how to cook and learn how to feed the kids healthy, home cooked meals. Twenty-plus years later, I finally have it down!

So, where does one begin? In the freezer, fridge, and pantry :)

I always keep certain items on-hand. These are generally items I can make many things out of. Example: ground beef or turkey can be cooked and added to spaghetti sauce, or chili, made into taco meat, hamburgers, meatloaf, mini meatloaf muffins, and more! Chicken breast can be added to casseroles, fajita meat, or just baked or tossed into a crock pot with marinade.

I like to keep these general items on-hand so I can either plan menus around these items, or have these ingredients available in case I crave a hamburger or I find a new recipe I can't wait to try out.

I also keep quick meals on hand, too, like frozen fish fillets, frozen meatballs, and frozen pizza. These are just heat-n-serve type things for super busy days.

If there's a sale on something I keep on-hand, I stock up.

Here's my general pantry list.

In my next post I will discuss recipes and such . . .
