What Holidays Are You Taking Off?

What holidays are you taking off for 2012?

For many years I took as few holidays as I could.  I think I was younger then.  A couple of years ago I didn't take any holidays off between Christmas and Memorial Day.  Way before Memorial Day I so much needed a break!  After that, I decided to take off all holidays because I needed the day off to be the best child care provider I could be!  Here's a 2012 holiday list.

January 2 -- New Years
January 16 -- Dr. Martian Luther King, Jr.
February 20 -- President's Day
April 6 -- Good Friday
May 28 -- Memorial Day
July 4 -- Independence Day
September 3 -- Labor Day
October 8 -- Columbus Day
November 12 -- Veteran's Day
November 22 & 28 -- Thanksgiving Day & day after
December 24 & 25 -- Christmas Eve & Christmas
December 31 & January 1, 2013 -- New Year's Eve & New Year's Day

You might consider also taking off Provider Appreciation Day on May 11, 2012 and your birthday.

I used to feel guilty about taking holidays off, but after that year with 5 months of no days off, I know I need the days off to be the best provider I can be.  I give out the list at the first of the year and everyone knows way ahead of time of the daycare closing.

When I did stay open for most holidays, I would always have a few children in care and then find out later that of of the parents had the day off or that they could have made other arrangements for the child that day so I could have had the day off.

Over the past few years I notice the holiday time off comes just in time when I'm feeling burned out.  I no longer feel guilty for closing!
