I was in an online discussion with other child care providers across the country about what type of plates and flatware we use for the children.

Most of us use paper and plastic plates and plastic flatware.  Someone pointed out that with the plastic or paper versions of plates and flatware, children tend to look at them as toys rather than tools.  Using metal flatware and glass dishes, the children will respect the utensils more.

I'm not ready for glass plates, but I thought I would give metal forks and spoons a try.  I found the (mismatched) set pictured above at a thrift store for 10 cents each.

The children do seem to respect and use them more.  I find less flatware on the floor after the meal.  Although, using the new flatware still takes practice and

hands still seem like a good choice for a utensil now and then.
